"Yeah Alaska often has rainy weather. But nothing compares to spot and stalking as icy sleet pellets pelt your face," Paul said with a grin as he turned to his passenger. "Especially when in pursuit of a huge, hulking bruin that snatched your breath away on sight." "Speaking of which a spotting scope comes in handy to identify them at distance," Meijers advised. "Then too, it can help you pick up a sow with cubs. Which ain't fair game you know. Recognizing that can save yourself a long hike for nothing?? |
He added, "You might miss them with binoculars. But not generally with a spotting scope."
Paul continued, "While I prefer spot-and-stalk bear hunting, I got no problems with baiting them either - where it's legal of course. Rotted meat and French fry grease works just fine for me. Just so I got a point of reference to judge how big he is, is all that matters. Don't want to take no scruffy Baby Bear. I'll leave them fellas for Goldilocks."
"Now in the spring, them hungry Yogis will seek out lush vegetation. So when scouting just like the bears do, follow the receding snow line. Check out the greenest areas and watch for tell tale signs like fresh bear droppings."
Paul summed it up, "Alaska black bear hunting offers the chance for one of the most fun unique hunts you could ever imagine."
