Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips In Arkansas

The fireplace crackled and added a warm glow to Bill Held's Fort Smith home. A veteran of many a Arkansas whitetail deer hunting adventure, Bill was explaining to his young friend Casey, where the best deer were in the state.

"I guess there's over a million white-tailed deer in Arkansas now. Trick is finding the big 'uns."

"But," he went on, "with that many animals the statewide bag limit has been bumped from three to four deer. With rifle season (as opposed to muzzleloader) opening the 2nd Saturday in November. That's bag limit bump pretty good news. I can remember times where there were hardly any deer to be had."

"If you're looking for public hunting access you don't want to look to the South," Bill pointed out. "That land is in the hands of the paper company boys. They in turn lease out the hunting rights. So land for public hunting down there is on the scarce side. "

"Of course limited access means better deer management. And bigger bucks."

"Also when timber is cut, that opens up areas of new growth. Lush feeding makes for more and better whitetail bucks - eventually."

"For public hunting you're looking at Forest Service land. Either wildlife management areas or national wildlife refuges."

"For instance there's the Ozark National Forest wildlife management area. And I've heard good things about deer hunting in the Felsenthal national wildlife refuge.

"Then again, over closer to the Oklahoma border you've got the Howard County wildlife management area. Another deer hotspot."

"Still, Arkansas whitetail deer hunting has come a long way since I was your age. I'd say the best tips would include hooking up with one of those hunting lodges on paper company land. Especially if you don't have all day to track down a buck on your own."
