On How to Build a Deer Stand

The Three Key Success Factors Behind Bow
Hunting Tripod Stands or Other Deer Stands

Like most real estate there are three important factors with deer stands. Location. Location. Location.

Sure hunting from bow hunting tripod stands may give you a better vantage point it does you no good if there aren't deer to see. Hence the emphasis on location.

Yet one reason to hunt from a stand is lots of hunting pressure. Other hunters will keep the deer moving. If your scouting has identified travel trails you'll have a good idea where best to set up your stand.

Ideally you want to be positioned near known food sources. Deer move from bedding areas to feeding areas naturally. And move more when driven by hunters.

How many stands? More is better than less. There are more than one good spot for a stand in the area you hunt regularly. To take advantage of that you need more than one stand.

Types of stands. Bow hunters favor tree stands because when they draw back that action may tip off the deer. An elevated stand puts that movement out of the typical deer field of vision.

Tree stands also offer similar benefits to rifle hunters.

Tree climbing models like say buckshot climbing deer stands let you shimmy up and down trees for more temporary advantage.

While ground level stands are casually built from enough available brush to blur your outline and give you a comfortable place to sit. Again more of a temporary set up.

Either way you want your deer box stands or casual rough hewn stands to be downwind of typical wind direction. To keep the deer from smelling you before you see them.
