When many think of mourning dove hunting, Mississippi comes to mind. A dove hunt there isn't just about doves. It's more like a multi-generational family tradition. Where everyone joins in and enjoys barbecue afterwards. Making it both a time for family and hunting.


Besides, the start of dove season also signals that Fall has arrived. Officially. Up North that may be signaled by the start of school. But the opening of dove hunting season in Mississippi is the marker there.

Yet successful dove hunts don't just happen. You have to prepare. For one by planting feeder crops like sunflowers. Timed to mature at just the right time to attract the birds.

Then you have to tend the fields. Leaving narrow rows of standing plants that provide shooting lanes for one and all.


Then you have to wait for the guests of honor to start to arrive. Usually no later than mid afternoon birds are circling the field to feed.

These fast flying aerial acrobats streak through the sky. Providing a great warm up for duck season. With about one bird taken for every five shells expended. More or less and who's counting anyway?

Well into the late afternoon you can hear the pop of shot guns echoing across the field. With dogs or kids off to retrieve the harvest.

Scout out flight paths to the known food sources ahead of time.

Pick your spot and sit still. Wait patiently for the birds to get well within range before even thinking about raising your shotgun. Close enough being 30 yards or closer.

In Mississippi a day of dove hunting closes with grilled dove breasts wrapped in bacon. Honestly it doesn't get any better than this.
