How to Set Up Decoys for Duck Hunting - Field Tested Tips

Jesse Bangert, sat perched on his swamp seat. Hidden in his duck blind among the cattails. Watching the skies. Waiting for the next shoe to fall.

Bangert put numbers in little boxes all day as a cost analyst. But when duck hunting in Arkansas Excel spreadsheets where the farthest thing from his mind. Which is just how he likes it.

Philosophy isn't every duck hunters strong suit. But Jesse takes a philosophical approach to waterfowl hunting.

"Many ducks got short-term memory problems," Bangert confessed. "That come into play when it comes to decoys. It's just that too many hunters got short term memory problems too. When it come to laying out their spread so it looks convincing and all."

Here's how I remember what to do. D-U-C-K--D-E-C-O-Y
D_uck hunt where the birds are not where you want them to be. Probably the most important thing to remember by the way.

U_nderstand that early in the seaon you'll want to set out more hens than drakes in your decoy spread.

C_alling adds an element of realism to your decoy set up.

K_eep species separate. Divers are attracted to diver decoys. Puddlers to puddlers. Makes sense right?

D_ucks usually tend to want to land into the wind.

E_xpect them to come in over your decoy layout. Set up near the intended landing zone accordingly.

C_onsider this rule of thumb of hunting success. You want to spend one hour scouting for every hour of hunting. So you can identify where duckes feed, sleep, rest, hang out, and seek refuge during bad weather.

O_ff to the side is the better positioning for your decoys relative to your blind rather than immediately upwind. That way circling ducks won't be able to easily spot you, your blind or the dogs as readily.

Y_ou want to position your decoys on far side of a narrow finger of water whenever possible. To encourage the ducks to land on the outside edge of the decoys, closer to your blind.
"Being an accounting type I'm somewhat of a perfectionist," Jeese admitted with a grin. "This helps me remember what I'm supposed to do to give myself the best chance at having woodies for Bart to retrieve.

Thanks, Jesse. These pointers about how to set up decoys for duck hunting apply whether you are duck hunting in Arkansas, Virginia, or South Dakota.
