Jump Shooting Duck Hunt - North Dakota

Ted James had big plans for duck hunting in North Dakota. James, an obstetrician, guards his time away from babies very carefully. When he is out jump shooting ducks, he gets a chance to clear his head and relax.

"The season typically opens on the last Saturday in September," James said. "There will be lots of ducks flying all over the place. The shooting is fantastic"

"Yet you know what? I feel jump shoooting is the lazy mans way to hunt. You simply flush the ducks from whatever pothole they're loafing on. Then take your shots."

"The trick is to shoot above the birds", Ted revealed. "Otherwise you're apt to shoot under them and end up with nothing. And jumpshooting beats the

crap out of getting up before dawn to set out decoys and then settling into a blind waiting for something to happen."

With jump shooting duck hunting, scouting counts. It's a deal breaker. Because you'll need to find several good ponds relatively close together.

Another strategy for duck hunting in North Dakota is find an area with several potholes. Stir up all the ducks you can find. You want to hurry up and lay out your decoys. Then wait for them to regroup and return. The decoys give them something to come back to.

There's one other trick you can try. Sometimes you can set field decoys. Out in the stubble and debris left over after the harvest in a field that's near a lake. Most duck hunters think hunting over water. You're apt to have the field all to yourself.

Those are three proven ways you can duck hunt North Dakota. Great for hunting the western half of the state especially.
