Hunting from a stand over bait rewards the patient. Which is why Fall black bear guided hunts are not for everyone.|

First someone has to patiently replenish the bait consistently. Not knowing for sure what they're feeding or if their efforts will pay off. All one knows is that over time the bear(s) will become used to the "fast food" hand outs. So the plan is stuck to patiently. Even if we all have better things to do than lugging a bag of goodies for an unknown bear. But then this is why you pay the outfitters. |
In much the same way ideally the bear has to learn patience. By that I mean the idea is not to make it easy for them to haul off the entire cache. Stuck in a barrel or under heavy logs lets the bear have at it. Just in measured doses. It also helps them get to the point where they linger around the bait pit or barrel long enough for you decide if they measure up or not when you're in the stand.
Speaking of which you will have to patiently wait in the stand.
For that reason carpeting in your stand is always a good idea. Muffles the sounds of your movements.
Padded seats won't hurt either. No telling how long you're going to be patiently sitting there.
And don't forget your safety harness.
Then too you want to eliminate all stand squeaks. A shifty stand is not a good thing either. It should be rock solid.
Learning to be comfortable shooting from a seated position is a must. Since you don't want to have to move any more than necessary before getting your shot off.
Plan to hide from the bugs using a head net and bug proof outerwear.
Luckily if you participate in Fall black bear guided hunts the outfitter will take care of most of this for you.
