C'mon, Can You Really Take Bluegills or Other Panfish on Common Trout Flies?
Sounds curious I know. Not what you'd expect either. Taking panfish like bluegills using trout flies doesn't really qualify as any kind of trout fishing tips now does it?

Still, if given half a chance, pan-fish will bite on trout flies.
Yeah, you can use dry flies all summer long to fish for small bass and bluegills. Just so you take into account the fact that bigger fish tend to head for the cooler, deeper waters as the summer rolls on. But you can still have some fun casting for the smaller fish hanging around the edges of weed beds.

So if you're willing to experiment you may find some trout patterns work just swell. Simply tie them a wee bit bigger. I'd suggest size 14 to 8 flies for bluegills. And 8-1/0 for small mouth.
If you aren't getting any action with those, give wolly buggers or some nymph flies a shot.
Or you may want to try a smaller version of the hard-bodied floating bass bug when fishing bluegills. Again casting shallow water for best results.
Pan-fish fly fishing can involve angling for crappies too. These are usually a little bigger than bluegills. Colored a pale green and striped with black or dark gray markings.
Just remember this fly fishing and flies pointer. When going after pan fish with dry flies, the fish may sometime inhale your fly. Explosively? Then what? How do you get your fly back without mangling the insides of the fish?
Actually the best solution is prevention.
Here's the tip. Use a slightly bigger hook than you'd think you'd need. That will let you hook the fish without it swallowing the fly - hook and all.
Fly fishing for panfish can be great fun. If you're up to the challenge you will be rewarded you with a tasty meal of fresh fish after a few hours on the water.
