Deer Blind Construction: Temporary
Ground Hunting Blinds

Blending in Naturally By Building Deer Blinds on the Fly

Gerald "Jerry" Nippert wasn't taken with "store bought blinds" as he called them.

"No, I don't care for them. I can build me a temporary one that serves the same purpose. Besides a natural ground blind gives me a closer shot usually at many a set of antlers that showed itself and all within easy rifle range."

"Ground hunting blinds are supposed to be hiding places," Nippert snorted, "not the Hilton. The idea is to blend in with whatever native brush you've got to work with to fool the owner of the antlers you want on your wall. To trick their senses into letting their guard down is all."

"You want to get yourself out there with a sharp machete in the early afternoon. The deer are bedded down and less likely to take notice of all the commotion and goings on."

Jerry went on, "Just don't do too much remodeling of the area. Deer can tell when things are dramatically different."

"All you do is set up a frame of some sort and whack off whatever leafy branches are available," he explained. "Pine. Aspen. Brush. Like you would do when constructing marsh grass hunting blinds for ducks."

"Camouflage burlap or netting can help too. When used with those branches to blur any unnatural looking horizontal lines of your framing."

"You want a spot that's in at least partial shade either with the afternoon or morning sun to help you blend in. With a tree trunk to lean against wouldn't hurt either."

Nippert also suggested, "Give it a dry run to see what kind of shooting lanes you're giving yourself. Taking pains to be on the game trails that are used to move from bedding to feeding areas, naturally."

"No there's nothing special about such hastily constructed ground hunting blinds. Except for the fact they let me be close to where the bucks are without them knowing."
