How to Bag a Trophy Bull
on Guided Elk Hunting Trips

New Mexico hunting guides (or outfitters in any state) will tell you that the first rule of shooting a trophy elk is to hunt where trophy elk are found. Well doh!

Yet regardless of if you opt for unguided or guided elk hunting trips, alas not all states and providences grow elk with head gear that will set your heart racing.

And even if they do grow 'em big, it's not likely you'll find them waiting for you to come and shoot them. Your trophy bull has likely taken up residence in a zip code far from the beaten path. And unless you or your guide know the lay of the land, it's unlikely you'll ever wander into his neighborhood much less see him.

You see to develop a trophy rack means the elk has had to survive more than a winter, or two, or eight!

Then again, like I said, not every state develops trophy animals. The best chance of finding one would be in Arizona, Montana, Wyoming, maybe New Mexico.

Should you get to go elk hunting New Mexico, you'll find the average elk is bigger than the average elk found elsewhere.

While all this may sound obvious, and you're packing your gear, there is a barrier to overcome before getting those airline tickets. Tags in states with big bulls are most often distributed by a lottery type drawing. And without a tag - no trophy elk hunt.

On top of that each state has its own myriad set of rules and regulations governing the sale of these tags. (You know how the government is.) Each with different deadlines, fees, applications and so forth.

The best bet is to apply for elk draws in multiple states. Which isn't much of a gamble since the odds of winning this 'elk tag lotto' in more than one state are worse than slim to none.

To save you some time here are links to five prime elk hunting states to make it easier for you to apply for tags.
Arizonia
Colorado
Montana
New Mexico
Wyoming
Of course working with an outfitter can avoid this unpleasantness as many of them receive an ample supply of tags each year. Book guided elk hunting trips with them and you'll be sighting in on your dream animal sooner rather than later. While tilting the odds of filling your tag with a really nice bull in your favor as well.
