Secure Deer Stand Designs for Safer Whitetailed Deer Hunts

After a long layoff due to hip surgery, James Lawson knew it was time to get back into the swing of things. Besides he had no intention of missing deer season. Of course his recent surgery made safe deer stand designs more important than they may have been previously. Although he had always felt hunters needed to be cautious whenever perched in tree stands.

Whether you're looking at how to build a deer stand or how to use one, here are some precautions to keep in mind.

Would it kill you to read the instructions BEFORE using the stand?

Make sure tree stands are permitted where you are planning to hunt.

Also find out how removable stands should be marked or identified.

Often public areas ban use of nails or any other fasteners that can damage the trees.

Got a portable stand? Then would it kill you to use a safety chain? Knowing it might if you don't?

All stands have a weight capacity rating. Don't exceed it.

If yours has been out in the weather maybe it time to do some routine maintenance. Especially if it's home made.

Tighten all nuts and bolts. Replace rusty or worn hardware. Lubricate cables and fittings with odorless cooking oil. (Petroleum based lubricates can alert the deer.) Inspect the ladder, and any cables or safety straps. Replace as needed.

Get a good body harness and always use it!

Never enter or exit any deer stand carrying a loaded firearm. Use a haul rope to lift your unloaded firearm, barrel pointing downward, to you.

Likewise don't stick equipment under the stand. That can only make falling worse.

Think ahead. Bring along an air horn, cell phone or two-way radio in case of emergency.

Don't build a tree stand unless you really know what you're doing. Because it's too easy to make a fatal mistake.

Follow these simple tips regarding how to build a deer stand with safety in mind and you'll be around for more whitetail hunting seasons to come.
