How to Set Up Decoys For Duck Hunting Mastery
Tactics for Bagging More Ducks
Eyes squinty into the sun reflecting off the water, Bruce was double checking his efforts. "Having a good decoy setup is key," he offered. "How you lay 'em out depends on what direction the wind is coming from and what type of duck you're hunting."

Bruce also pointed out that it is important to scout around. See what ducks are doing. And react accordingly.
"Everything I do is based off what I've seen in the marsh."
Here are some other tips on how to set up decoys for duck hunting success.
|
Create a Landing Zone
Put the decoys where you do not want the ducks to land. While giving the ducks plenty of room to land near your blind.
Finger to the Wind
Ducks prefer to land into the wind. Set up the landing zone so the birds will be gliding toward you.
J-lo Pattern
Don't be afraid to give the traditional "J" or fishhook pattern a shot. Many believe the ducks will follow the shaft of the "J" down to where it hooks. Which just so happens to be near your blind.
Safety in Numbers
Ducks feel safe in a crowd. And will investigate anything that's potentially a good time. Your decoys want to suggest both.
Birds of a Feather Flock Together
So you want to group your decoys by species. Stick all your pintails in a group. The teal ducks in a bunch. And put the grays together too.
Change with the Season
Early season and late season decoy layouts will be different since the birds will be more decoy-wary later on.
The art of decoying is critical to water fowl hunting. Being versatile and knowing how to set up decoys for duck hunting can make the difference between success and failure.
