Unguided Elk Hunting On Private Land In Idaho

Some hunters are turning to unguided elk hunting on private land in Idaho to improve their success rate. Which usually means turning to terrain that is accessible only by foot or on horseback too.


Which may not be a bad move given hunters must target the more hard to reach areas to find trophy bulls anyway.

That's because elk generally prefer rugged, timbered terrain. Yet you can beat the typical, if meager, 25% success rate by hunting private land. That has seen fewer hunters. Meaning less pressure on the elk.


Tip: When the weather is warm, elk will bed down on northern slopes because the timber is heavier.

There are four primary Idaho elk hunting techniques.

• You can mimic bulls or cows and use calling strategies
• If you can find where the elk feed, stand hunting is a popular option
• Still hunting is harder because of density of the timber elk favor
• After a fresh snow tracking is the fourth option

Once the real shooting starts, expect the spooked herds to move toward private land hideaways. That's where few hunters venture. Or where fewer hunters are allowed.

The exception being when early storms drive the elk to lower elevations.

That's right. As always weather will almost certainly affect your success. More snow and colder temps means you'll find animals concentrated at lower elevations.

Take advantage of unguided elk hunting on private land in Idaho and you may bring back the trophy you're dreaming of.
