Montana Deer Hunt TacticsA most effective Montana deer hunt tactic is the classic spot and stalk.
Set up in your vantage point, preferably before it starts to get light. You're trying to spot feeding deer or those heading towards their bedding areas. What are the deer doing? Are they feeding or bedded down? Next look to see what cover is available for you to take advantage of. What about reference points you can use to note where you are relative to the deer. Do you have any such things? Think you can realistically get close enough for a decent shot? Never start out until you've got a path developed that will get you within striking range. The ideal situation is where the animal you're pursuing has bedded down. That gives you plenty of time to get to it since it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Just so you monitor the wind and be as quiet as possible. Remember the idea is to get to the animal before it sees you. When stalking if you make any discernable noise just wait a bit longer before making your next move. If the mule buck is bedded down and you're within range the best thing that can happen is for the animal to stand and give you a clear shot. Yet should it start to move too soon, give up any thought of catching it from behind. Keep it in sight until it beds down again. You might look to figure out where it's heading. So you can ambush it on the way. These are some basic spot and stalk techniques you might keep in mind on your next Montana deer hunt.
