Yes by all accounts there may be an abundance of bucks available. But there may also be an abundance of hunters in pursuit of them on their own personal once-in-a-lifetime Montana deer hunt. Myself I'd head for the western part of the state. And seek out tiny patches of isolated cover often overlooked by your hunting brethren. Who wrongly think that no self-respecting buck would be found dead (or alive) there. You may be surprised to have an incredible trophy buck present himself. |
Reports from the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks confirm more than decent carryover in the state. But there's an emphasis on patience if you want to get a trophy buck. Suggesting the last few weeks of the season might be best.
Check station reports last year also support a favorable outlook. At least based on the percentage of deer checked sporting four points on each antler at least.
That suggests the Seeley Lake and Swan Valley backcountry might well be prime whitetail territory. The Northern Rockies landscape may give you a chance to take a shooter buck during the season which runs from the middle of September continuing through November.
If you're up to the challenge of figuring out where to hunt in a featureless woods holding widely scattered wild life, then Montana deer hunting may be for you.
