How to Dress For Success on Your Next Montana Deer Hunt

Alan Wilke had hiked the Lewis and Clark National Forest in pursuit of white-tails.


He had been to Craig, Montana hunting mule deer and enjoyed whitetail deer hunting in Montana Milk River area.

And he already had plans to get in some Northwest Montana deer hunting this season.

"I don't care who you are, if you're cold you won't be an effective hunter," Wilke proclaimed. "Success on any Montana deer hunt means dressing for the conditions."

"Since Montana can be cold in deer season it's smart to prepare for ice, sleet, bone chilling rain and of course snow. Lots of snow."

One proven tactic is wearing layers of soft clothing that can be added to or subtracted from as conditions warrant. Here's some tips on what the layers should be.
Polypropylene is good material for long underwear and sock liners since it wicks moisture from your skin. That way when you are walking and stalking your sweat doesn't accumulate on you.

Wool is good for the next layer for warmth obviously

Fleece or wool outwear works best since it's warm, quiet and relatively light weight.

While in your fanny pack you can stow rain gear for times when that would be appropriate.
Now maybe the next time you find yourself in Northwest Montana deer hunting, you'll be properly prepared for whatever Mother Nature delivers up.
