Pheasant Hunting in Virginia

The Secret Lives of Virginia Ring-Tail Hunters

Bernie Pollack, delivery driver for a national soft drink company whose name you'd recognize, refused to be dissuaded As he revealed his plan to go pheasant hunting in Virginia friends warned him against it. "This aint South Dakota", one quaintly told him.

Bernie knew Virginia wasn't exactly a hot spot for ring-tails.

He also knew it didn't even rank as a second tier state due in large part to lack of suitable habitat.

But he some were having successful hunts going after them here.

Besides it was a good way to spend time in the field with your dog and maybe a close friend or two.

So say you were fortunate enough to find wetland pheasant habitat. Fortunate because it for sure won't be suffering from hunting pressure.

Even better wetlands make for great pheasant habitat. Especially those next to corn fields. Since that gives the ring tails both a ready supply of food and secure cover.

So how do you approach this situation?
When hunting wetlands remember you're going to have to work for any birds you take. Sorry I can't change that. It's just how it is.

Generally you want to work the edges and any high spots. Again luck plays a role in how easy this will be. Assuming you come across a deer trail at least you'll have a path to follow.

I'd say you want to forget this approach if you don't have an eager bird flusher like a trained Lab. Since it will roust those roosters that decide to lay low and hunker down instead of making a break for it.

Waders are also recommended. They aren't called wetlands for nothing you know. And you may need to venture into water of some depth to retrieve your birds.
This approach to wetlands pheasant hunting in Virginia (or elsewhere) is not for the faint hearted. But it can reward those passionate enough to face the challenge - with a bag full of birds.
