Tall Grass Pheasant Hunting Techniques
How to Pheasant Hunt the Grass Fields of South Dakota
The first time Alison Harloff saw some of the tall grass country in the high plains that resulted from the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) she knew any pheasant hunt there would likely be special. Since CRP fields make for better ring neck habitat than hay fields. Which inevitably seem to need mowed around nesting time.|

Of course you need special pheasant hunting techniques when tramping through the tall grass. Or other higher overgrown cover. To that end here are some ideas Alison shared. "Watch for varied cover", Harloff noted. "You'll want to hunt any drainage ditches or smaller creeks that meander through a grass field. The birds seem to favor varied cover over grassy fields alone." |
"Then too you'll want to focus on the edges," she went on. "You're more apt to find the most birds on the edges and the grass tends to confine or pen them in kinda."
"If you see brush or trees within the field try there first. Birds will also head for these heavy cover areas. Again they like varied cover rather than just grasslands alone. "
"When I work tall grass with my dogs, I prefer more humid days. Moist grass holds the scent better," Harloff allowed. "Just remember if the grass is too wet, you probably won't find may roosters within."
Speaking of dogs, a good flusher can come in handy when working tall grass. Since the pheasants may prefer to run for it than fly away. And a dog can help you locate downed birds easier.
Anyway those are a few tall grass pheasant hunting techniques to keep in mind when you have an opportunity to hunt grass fields.
