The one stat that was burned into his brain was that 3 times as many birds were taken in the first half of the season as in the second half. That's due to the fact his hunting brethren wanted to get their share of the dumber young roosters. Which are easier prey.

"Also", Shawn allowed, "early season phesant hunting in South Dakota meant you don't need to be a genius to find birds to shoot. Cornfields, grasslands, and cattail sloughs all provide ample shooting opportunities.

The second half of the season, however, is what separates the men from the boys when it comes to the annual South Dakota phesant hunt

"One thing we did last year was wait out the first day phesant hunter barrage," Moorehead said. "Flushed birds move around quite a bit. Plus we successfully sought out the harder-to-reach cover that all but the most passionate hunters would tend to ignore."

Another tip you might glean from South Dakota pheasant hunting guides involves choice of shot. "Early in the season you'll be doing close range shooting", Shawn revealed. "And it's best to go with 6 or 7 1/2 shot if you can."

"Obviously I can't say if these few tips will insure successful your phesant hunting In South Dakota adventure will be a hit or not. But they sure can't hurt."
