Dreaming of Landing a Rainbow?

Rainbow Trout Tips to Know For Better Results

For Henry Clay, landing a huge rainbow trout was a lifetime dream. "What helped me land a trophy rainbow was knowing a few rainbow trout tips and facts. That let me be a better fly angler."

"If a rainbow weighs in at 15 lbs. or more, I'd call a 'trophy-worthy' fish. Wouldn't you?," Clay asked no one in particular. "For sure it's mount-worthy at the least."

Rainbows originated from the Pacific Coast region of North America. Going by the scientific name "onchorhynchus mykiss" (is that a mouthful or what?) they are the second most numerous trout species.

Rainbows thrive in water as varied as icy mountain streams to enclosed ponds. But to thrive they must have high quality water that is cool rather than warm with a ready food supply.

In fact, since they prefer cool water, the highest temperature it can withstand is about twenty-five degrees Celsius.

Now because of this preference for cooler waters, they are more likely to be found in the mountainous coastal regions of the Northeast upper Midwest or Rocky Mountain West.

Then too since many rivers and streams have been stocked with rainbows in Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana. So it is any wonder why these states are well known for exceptional rainbow trout fishing?

Trout Fact: These fish can scoop insects off the water's surface without causing much, if any, rippling.

The coloration of adult rainbows is a green or bluish back with black spots on the dorsal fin, the tail and their back. Some have rose colored gill plates with wide red flanks.

Actually it turns out their appearance depends on what geographic area they are found in. For instance Alaskan rainbows have many spots and colors. While Alberta's rainbows are more chrome with dark green backs. Sporting few spots and no red stripe.

Some would tell you that the Bristol Bay area in Alaska is one of the best rainbow hot-spots in North America.

When casting, remember rainbows will rise to dry flies. Or you may try tempting them with wet flies that look like stone-fly nymphs, bullhead minnows or crayfish.

Hopefully you'll land more fish armed with these rainbow trout tips and facts.
