Rainbows thrive in water as varied as icy mountain streams to enclosed ponds. But to thrive they must have high quality water that is cool rather than warm with a ready food supply. Now because of this preference for cooler waters, they are more likely to be found in the mountainous coastal regions of the Northeast upper Midwest or Rocky Mountain West. Actually it turns out their appearance depends on what geographic area they are found in. For instance Alaskan rainbows have many spots and colors. While Alberta's rainbows are more chrome with dark green backs. Sporting few spots and no red stripe. Some would tell you that the Bristol Bay area in Alaska is one of the best rainbow hot-spots in North America. When casting, remember rainbows will rise to dry flies.
