Shotgun Choke Guide for the Likes of

Hopefully you're not reading this wondering "What is shotgun choke?" But rather you understand that a choke is used to control shot distribution. Rather the ideal is to present a quick and dirty shot density shotgun choke chart. That covers the basics since there have never been so many choke options available to you. Making it impossible to even come close to addressing anywhere near the choices you've got.

Which also means you may need to read between the lines. Either a lot or a little depending on your preferred choke.


Here is a quick and dirty little shotgun choke guide. To give you an idea of shot densities to expect when patterning your shotgun.
Type of Choke 30 yards 40 yards
Cylinder 60% 30%
Skeet 70% 40%
Improved cylinder 75% 40%
Modified 80% 50%
Improved modified 90% 60%
Full 100% 70%
Hopefully this shotgun choke chart helps you better understand the differences in chokes.

You will want to pattern test your shotgun obviously. Since not all shotguns shoot alike.

So here's how to pattern a shotgun.

All you do is shoot a sheet of butcher paper that's about 40 inches square from 40 yards away.

Then draw a 30 inch circle around the area with the most pellet holes.

Next count the number of holes the pellets made. Divide that by the number of pellets in the shell and you've got an idea of the shot density.

Then experiment with different chokes to get the density pattern best suited for the game you're shooting.
