How Choke Size Can Impact Upland Bird Hunts
There's little doubt Howard Schimmel has been on more than his fair share of successful upland bird hunts. What is in doubt, as if often the case, is which of the shotgun choke sizes available results in bagging the most quail, pheasant, or grouse.|

Today's interchangeable choke-tube systems give hunters like Schimmel several options. For instance you can pick from a cylinder, to a modified, to an improved cylinder to a full choke.
Upland gunners tend to lean toward open chokes. Which are best for close range shooting. Or as Schimmel put it the heart attack flush where the birds burst into the sky from right at your feet.
When hunting at longer ranges, tight chokes would be preferred.
If you want to find the best one for your shooting situation you want to pattern your gun. To do that,
• Grab some plain brown wrapping paper.This gives you the percent which tells you shot density. Adjust your choke accordingly.
• Aim at the circle from 40 yards and fire away.
• Draw a 30 inch circle around the pellet holes.
• Then count the number of pellets that hit inside the circle.
• Divide by the number of pellets in the shell.
Today's varied shotgun choke sizes give you the hunter many options. But it's up to you to test to find the best choke for your hunting situation.
