South Dakota Waterfowl Hunts and Decoys
Tricks That Can Produce More Sterling South Dakota Waterfowl Hunting Memories
Garrett Thorton was walking along a shrinking prairie pothole before dawn.
|
The breeze was picking up.
Snow flakes were starting to swirl.
Gray clouds were hanging low.
In other words it was perfect weather for South Dakota waterfowl hunting.
|
"You know the worse the weather the better I like it," Thorton said to Joe Arnold, his hunting buddy of 17 years and counting. Like he had never heard THAT before.
"If you're coming up to South Dakota, bird hunting," Joe agreed, "it gets a lot easier in weather like this. Even for a couple of bad shots like us!"
While it's hard to give any hard and fast rules for South Dakota waterfowl hunts, they both agreed that decoys were a critical duck hunting tool. "Don't matter what you got. Full bodied and realistic or silhouttes. Duckhunting ground decoys or floaters - take your pick given your situation naturally. But you gotta use what you got. "
"What we do when field hunting is set the realistic ones on the edge of our layout. Sticking any silhoulettes in the middle." Joe said nodding.
"And don't forget," Thorton chimed in, "to face them in different directions."
"Sometimes we use 'confidence decoys' too. That might be goose decoys mixed in among with your ducks. A seagull or two can't hurt. Just set the "off" species upwind of the majority of your decoys. Ducks prefer to land over their own."
"Goose flags are another decoy trick. They're nothing more than black cloth stapled onto black stakes. But when they ripple in the wind they must look something like feeding geese."
Regardless of these good bits of decoy advice Garret pointed out, "the best way to get more birds, and this works whether you're on North or South Dakota waterfowl hunts, is the way that's always worked. Start early and stay late."
They both got a good chuckle out of that one. As they continued to put out their spreads.
