Spring Turkey Hunting Techniques - When Thoughts Turn to Turkey Calling
Tom Foolery - Using Slate Turkey Calls Or Friction Turkey Calls to Call in the Toms
Like many, Chase Olander gets fired up when talk turns to Spring turkey hunting in Texas. He's a proud turkey caller. Proud he can sweet-talk them toms in so close he could hit em, as he puts it, even without his eye glasses on.
|
Now there are two kinds of calls those like Chase an turn to when looking to fool any amorous tom. Friction calls and air calls. Expect prices to run anywhere from around $20 to as much as $75. More cost doesn't always equal better calling either.
Friction turkey calls are easier to use. A box call being a prime example of one. The yelps, clucks and other turkey noises are produced by stroking a chalked surface inside the box. Even a first-time-in-the-field novice can produce passable gobbles, clucks and purrs that mimic these birds good enough.
|
Besides being easy to use, by it's nature, it produces a much a louder call. That carries well. Which may or may not be of value. Depending on where you set up to do your Spring turkey hunting TX style.
For best results you want to keep your box caller dry. Then too even being in heavy humid air can affect the sound of the call produced.
You also want to avoid getting the friction surface dirty or greasy. Since that can also diminish the resulting calls generated.
A slate turkey call is also friction oriented. In this case you, use a peg made of various materials to produce the sounds. A plexiglass peg might be best since it words wet or dry. You're looking for one that makes a range of sounds.
In general slate calls produce natural, fairly low yet kinda raspy turkey sounds. Some say it's not as loud as other types. But it darn sure is realistic and very authentic turkey noises. Good enough to fool more than enough of those love sick toms eager to respond to the real thing.
This much is certain - turkey callers are great tools for inexperienced callers. That work to keep a bird's attention misdirected elsewhere. Just remember, no matter how lifelike the call they produce, such "tom fool-ery" can't make up for your lack of turkey huntin' skills. As all turkeys aren't as dumb as they look.
