Turkey Calling Tips

The Art of Making Convincing Turkey Calling Sounds

Jerry Cassanova is hoping it will be enough. An assistant prosecutor, during the refreshing Texas Spring turkey hunting season he seeks a different quarry.

It's not that he didn't know how to call in a wild turkey. He'd done that plenty of times. His rule is simple. Most of the time if you make a noise that almost sounds like it could be from a bird even remotely related to a turkey you're good.

All the while hoping that he was camouflaged well enough.

It's never good to 'hope' about camouflage.

Turkeys have keen eye sight. And can detect the least bit of motion.

Still if you're halfway decent at calling, you should still get your bird.

3 Things to Know About Turkey Calling Sounds

Most hunters use some sort of turkey calls either when scouting or hunting. So it would be helpful to master a call or two yourself that no self respecting tom can ignore.

Now the first pointer is don't' wait until the last minute to master that call or two. Or to try to refresh your calling skills either. Start practicing at least a month before turkey hunting starts.

For beginners, box calls seem about the easiest to learn and use in the field. Not much to them as long as you keep them dry.

At the other end of the ease to learn spectrum are reed calls. Most would tell you they are NOT easy to learn.

Finally don't talk turkey or use turkey sounds to alert a nearby hunter of your presence. Not a good idea.

Anyway, if you plan on joining Jerry, engaged in spring turkey hunting TX style, remember this tip. Scout ahead while it's still dark and find out where the birds are roosting. This pointer may be better than any turkey calling tips I could give you, don't you think?
