Turkey Hunting Shot SizeMost Lethal Turkey Hunting Shotgun ShellsBeing new to the sport Tim Murphy didn't even know what sized shot he needed. Turning to his more experienced friend, Elmer, he learned more than he ever expected to.
Basically when it comes to turkey hunting shot size you have to pick between throwing up a dense pattern verses delivering a knock down blow. So say you could use #4 to #6 in your neck of the woods. If you want to go for density, go with 6's. If you want knock down power, then 4's are you best bet. Remember turkeys can be tough to bring down. They've got a relatively small vital area where they can be hurt. That would be the neck and head area. Where they lack protective feathers. With a head shot you are not trying to shoot through feathers. So most of the time the more shot you can put up the better. Afterwards, the size of the shot becomes more important. No sense in having any unnecessary meat damage. Besides a stray pellet can crack a tooth unless it's discovered. So from that perspective larger shot size is preferred. So shot size isn't all that critical. Hitting a vital spot sure it though.
