What to Expect on Wyoming Mule Deer Hunts
It's early. Still dark early. Not exactly warm either.The first day of my big Wyoming mule deer hunting adventure. Josh, an affable 22 year old came in and to lit the propane heater in my tent to chase away the chill.

12 minutes later the Honda generator roars to life. Now that I've got lights, I roll out of my bag and get dressed the rest of the way. Half starved, don't know when I've ever tasted a better breakfast. Next I pack my lunch, fill my canteen, and plan the day with the guide. Obviously he's done mule deer hunts in this part of Wyoming before. |
My horse, and no I'd never been on a horse before, is used to following the horse in front of him. So any worries I had about being an rodeo quality barrel rider are quickly put to rest. It's basically just riding along, holding on, for about 50 minutes, so we can be in position at daybreak.
We scanned the hillsides and ridges. Glassing south-facing slopes for muleys. When that didn't turn up anything, hiked with Josh to likely bedding spots and feeding zones.
Man the scenery takes your breath away. But you gotta be in shape. Wyoming mule deer hunting involves a lot of hiking up and down rugged country. More than I expected that's for sure. Since once you spot a buck, you've got to get to where he is. Pronto. Or at least within shooting range of where he is.
After lunch I take a nap. Then it's more hunting and hiking until nearly dark. Heading back to camp the same way we left. On horseback.
Once there was greeted with the news that one guy got himself a nice buck. Another of a long list successful Wyoming mule deer hunts for his guide I guess. Which really gets my juicy flowing. Can't wait to get back at it again tomorrow. Sore legs and all.
