How Are Muleys Different Than
Whitetails? Let Me Count the Ways!

Ask anyone who has hunted both mule deer and whitetails and they'll confirm they're different.

"Oh yeah muleys are night and day different from whitetails," Brian Workman stated with confidence. Standing in the shadows somewhere near Jackson Hole, Wyoming mule deer hunting.

"People think mule deer are stupid. Not so. Not even close. They're just different. And you got to approach them different too."

So if you're heading out to get in some Wyoming mule deer hunting, armed with your newly minted hunting license for Wyoming, you might want to know about those differences, don't you think?

What You Should Know About Mule Deer

"For starters," Brian said, "they're bigger. Okay, admittedly that was a cheapie. Everyone knows they're obviously bigger."

"Mule bucks are most always super-alert and more social than their white tailed cousins - which tend to be more solitary. You'll find mulies will hang out in bachelor groups. Each animal facing out on look out. And since they often live in open country they have excellent vision too."

"Being the cautious types be ready to take your best shot at a greater distance than you would a whitetail," Workman advised. "Because you may not get much closer without spooking 'em."

"When you are hunting whitetails you can expect to spend time up on a stand. Where as stalking skills are what count if you want to get you a mule buck. According to one study I saw 80 percent were shot by hunters on foot. It's the exact opposite for whitetails. 80 percent of them were shot by hunters using tree stands."

Brian continued, "You'll typically get your whitetail in the evening or early morning, right. But did you know most mule deer are taken between 10 AM and 3:00 in the afternoon? Experienced hunters put in the time glassing and watch for them to bed down. They then stalk from there."

So that's five ways the two species are different. Keep that in mind on your way get in some Wyoming mule deer hunting this Fall.
